'serving the underserved'

VISION:  PARTNERING WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES

NEXT EVENT:

One of my best friends asked me recently, why are you focusing so much energy on Memorial Day?   I responded without hesitation that every year around Memorial Day my focus turns to July 28, 1968, the day my roommate, 1stLt Bill Zuehlsdorf, was killed in a helicopter crash in S. Vietnam.

On that morning just before he died, Bill and I shared a brief moment as we inhaled breakfast before our missions for that day - freeze dried eggs, bacon (from an unknown source) and brown hot water (looked like coffee to me).  Following breakfast, we walked to our squadron’s hangar complex at the Marine Corps Helicopter Air Station just outside of the city of Da Nang, referred to as Marble Mountain, South Vietnam, to prepare for our resupply missions.  After we completed the respective helicopter preflight, we shook hands, saluted each other and each walked to our assigned helicopters.  Bill and his crew took off about 15 minutes ahead of my planned departure time.  As I entered the flight deck and strapped into the seat, my crew chief came running to my open window yelling “A helicopter just crashed, aircraft destroyed.  No survivors”!  I knew immediately it was Bill’s helicopter.  I was shocked, stunned, devastated but our resupply mission was critical and could not be delayed.  There was no time for grief, time for action only, so our aircraft launched returning to the airbase about 10 hours later.  It was long day.  Losing my roommate and the entire flight crew on that day in July 1968 is why Memorial Day causes me to pause every Memorial Day and reflect on why I’m still here and he isn’t.

For the veterans who survived that war, let’s not forget the names on “the wall” and continue to honor their service.  This is why Memorial Day is my time to focus on Memorial Day, remembering and honoring the fallen including my friend Bill.

welcome!
